Stockton bank suspect charged with murder, kidnapping and robbery

The surviving suspect in the deadly Stockton bank robbery is facing 35 felony counts, including three counts of murder and 23 counts of attempted murder in connection with the dramatic incident.

A 45-page criminal complaint filed by the San Joaquin County district attorney’s office Monday outlines the charges filed against Jaime Ramos, 19.

The charges include three counts of murder for the deaths of Misty Jean Holt-Singh, the 42-year-old bank customer who was taken hostage and later used as a human shield, and Alex Martinez and Gilbert Renteria Jr., the two other suspected bank robbers killed in the subsequent shootout with police.

Under California law, prosecutors can charge a person who takes part in a crime with the death of anyone who loses their life during that crime, even if they were also suspects. Martinez and Renteria were shot and killed by police, authorities said.

Ramos also faces one count of attempted murder against the bank’s manager, who was wounded, and 22 counts of attempted murder of a police officer.

The remaining charges include robbery, kidnapping, carjacking, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, criminal street gang activity, possession of an assault weapon and evading a police officer.

The charges came with a string of special circumstances, including allegations that Ramos was a member of a gang and that his actions were to benefit the gang’s activity.

Ramos, who appeared in a San Joaquin County courthouse Monday afternoon, is being held without bail.

Authorities said Ramos was one of three men armed with handguns and an assault rifle who held up a Bank of the West branch July 16, taking three hostages and leading police on a dramatic pursuit across the county while firing hundreds of rounds at the pursuing officers.

The gunfire peppered homes, police cars and other vehicles.

When the chase ended, authorities said, Ramos was taken into custody but his two accomplices were dead.
