Strong winds, high surf forecast for Southern California
Strong winds and high surf could churn up hazardous conditions in parts of Southern California on Thursday and Friday, forecasters say.
The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory late Wednesday for strong winds with gusts up to 50 mph in Los Angeles and Ventura County mountains, the Interstate 5 corridor, the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Santa Barbara County coast through at least Friday morning.
Some of the fiercest winds are expected in the Antelope Valley, where they could down trees or cause power outages, according to forecasters.
“There will be blowing sand and dust, which could lower visibility to near zero at times across highways 14 and 138,” according to a post on the National Weather Service website, which urged drivers to use extra caution because of hazardous cross-winds.
On the coast, forecasters expect winds to combine with an ocean swell to cause high surf and hazardous beach conditions from Thursday to Friday evening.
The National Weather Service issued advisories for high surf and dangerous rip currents. Forecasters also warned of dangerous swimming conditions as well as potential beach erosion and coastal flooding at high tide.
