A bomb squad was sent to UC San Diego on Friday after a grenade was found in a utility tunnel on campus. The squad subsequently determined the grenade was an inert training device, officials said.

The grenade appeared to have been dropped accidentally, not planted as a threat, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Mónica Muñoz said.

She had no information as to why someone would be carrying a training grenade through the tunnel, though.

The Metro Arson Strike Team was sent to campus shortly before 10 a.m. The grenade was found in the underground passage below Scholars Lane, between Muir College and the main gymnasium, university spokeswoman Jade Griffin said.

No evacuations were ordered, she said.

UC San Diego police are continuing to investigate.
