Man due in court in shooting death of AM/PM clerk in Victorville

A man is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in the shooting death of an AM/PM store clerk in Victorville just as his shift was ending.

Eric David Robbins, 35, is being held without bail in the Aug. 11 killing of Daniel Olivera, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department jail records.

Robbins was arrested near his home by a special Sheriff’s Department unit Friday after tips from the public identified him as Olivera’s suspected killer.

Olivera, a 26-year-old father of four from Hesperia, was fatally shot in the upper body as he chatted with a security guard outside the entrance of a Victorville AM/PM store about 11 p.m.

“He was standing outside of the store when he fell to the ground,” Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Cindy Bachman said.

Some customers and people pumping gas told authorities they heard a “pop” before Olivera collapsed, but no one identified it as a gunshot, and they did not see a shooter, Bachman said.

“It’s very strange,” Bachman told TV reporters the day after the shooting. “There’s no altercation going on and suddenly he’s shot.”

But a review of the store’s security cameras showed that about 40 minutes before Olivera was shot, there indeed was a confrontation -- but it was between Robbins and the security guard, not Olivera.

Was the security guard the intended target?

“I think there’s a possibility,” department spokesman Randy Naquin said. “The only person that would know that is Robbins.”
