Homicide detectives are investigating a violent attack in Willowbrook where authorities say four men stood outside an SUV late Thursday and released a barrage of gunfire on a man and woman sitting inside.

The couple was hit multiple times and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, Los Angeles County sheriff’s department officials said. The man was rushed to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

The attack occurred about 11 p.m. in the 700 block of East 137th Street, according to the sheriff’s department. Detectives said the pair were sitting in a parked SUV on East 137th and Stanford place when two vehicles pulled up alongside, four gunmen stepped out and opened fire.

“About 12 rounds, about 12 shots. It sounded ugly, something you don’t want to be part of,” resident Jose Quintero told CBS Los Angeles.

The woman’s identity was not immediately available.

No arrests have been made. The shooters’ vehicles were described as white and compact, and dark or possibly green, respectively. Anyone with information is asked to call sheriff’s homicide at (323) 890-5500.

There have been 191 violent crimes in Willowbrook in the last six months and 42 homicides within a mile of Thursday’s shooting since 2007, according to the Homicide Report and a Times analysis of crime statistics provided by the sheriff’s department.
