A woman was killed Sunday when she was struck by a car that then slammed through a brick wall in a church parking lot in Ventura County, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 12:30 p.m. at the First Assembly Church of God in Port Hueneme, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

The driver, identified as Odessa Edward, apparently hit the accelerator instead of the break, police told KTLA. She was hospitalized as a safety precaution, and will be cited for reckless driving, according to police.

The woman who died at the scene was identified as Maria McCroskey.

Another woman who was also hit by the vehicle suffered broken legs, according to her son.

“We heard her screaming, and we heard the big bang and we just came over here,” said Andrea Galindo, who later began a makeshift memorial at the scene. “That’s just something no one should have to see.”
