State Sen. Anthony Cannella (R-Ceres) was by far the top vote-getter against Democratic opponent Shawn K. Bagley in the primary election Tuesday, setting the stage for a rematch in November.

As the only two candidates in the primary, Cannella and Bagley will appear on the November general election ballot.

Cannella, who was first elected to the Senate in 2010, is the son of former Assemblyman Sal Cannella.

The 12th District seat was one of three deemed key by the two parties as Democrats seek to regain their supermajority this year. In redistricting, it was drawn so that Democrats make up 42% of registered voters and Republicans account for 32%.
