Share

A university near Hartford, Conn., was put on lockdown and police swarmed the campus on Monday afternoon as reports circulated of an armed suspect on campus.

“Get inside buildings & Stay in place!” said an alert on the website for Central Connecticut State University, which described the event as a “campus emergency.” “Stay away from Windows. Police are on the Scene.”

There was no immediate report of gunshots or injuries, and further details from officials were not immediately available as police swarmed the campus in New Britain, a southwest suburb of Hartford.

“Everyone on #CCSU’s campus MUST stay indoors and find shelter. This is not a drill!” the university’s Twitter account tweeted.

The school remains under a shelter-in-place warning while police search the campus, according to university spokesman Mark McLaughlin.

A report was received by the school about 9:30 a.m. of a person of interest seen with a weapon, McLaughlin told the Los Angeles Times.

As a precaution the school sent out emergency notification urging staff and students to seek shelter in place, he said.

After more than 90 minutes of searching, no one had been apprehended, he said.

No weapon has been found and there have been no reports of any violence, he said.

The warning will stay in place until police complete their search, he said.

Reporters at the scene encountered a blocked-off campus, with students peeking out of windows in locked-down buildings at police and journalists gathering outside.

Students told WFSB-TV that someone with a gun was on campus wearing a ski mask, with much of the police attention focusing on James Hall.
