Web Buzz: Gate Guru
Cooling your heels at the airport? This app will help you find dining options, plus deals for bargain-hunters
Name: Gate Guru
Available for: Android,iPhone
What it does: Puts information on airport amenities at more than 120 airports in your pocket. Spans the U.S., Canada, Europe and Asia, with 50 more airports to be added soon.
Cost: Free
What’s hot: The food section of this app is handy if you’re looking for non-fast-food options or want to avoid restaurants with slow service. Select the terminal you’ll be using, then click on Food to see options, locations by gate numbers, user ratings and photos. If you’re a frequent traveler, join the “High Flyers” social media feature and earn points for writing reviews and sharing on Twitter and Facebook. Top scorers can win cool travel prizes.
What’s not: Security checkpoint times are reliable only if users update them. When I looked at LAX, the comment on a checkpoint wait time was 2 days old.
Worth it: Coupon hunters will love hunting for deals. I found 22% off a one-time pass to United’s Red Carpet Club when I was reading up on amenities at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (look under “Entire Airport” in the Terminals section).
