It’s a burger… it’s a sandwich … it’s both! And it’s 1,160 calories!

It seems that restaurants can’t stop one-upping each other when it comes to creating uber-fatty dishes that pose a calorie count rivaling the gross national product of Belize.

The latest salvo has been fired by Friendly’s, a chain of family restaurants that has come up with the Grilled Cheese BurgerMelt, a hamburger with more than a simple bun to keep it warm. This burger is sandwiched between two sandwiches — two grilled cheese sandwiches. So it’s grilled cheese sandwich, then burger, lettuce, tomato and mayo, then grilled cheese sandwich.

It’s the perfect meal for those who can’t decide between a burger and a sandwich. Why not have both?

The BurgerMelt has 1,160 calories, 1,930 mg of sodium, 83 grams of fat and 52 grams of carbs. If there’s any good news, it’s that this concoction has 5 grams of fiber and 50 grams of protein.

Those of us in California are out of luck trying this bad boy because there are no Friendly’s here (When we tried to find the nearest one on the website, it listed Defiance, Ohio, a mere 1,913 miles away). And, in the interest of fairness, Friendly’s does include more healthful choices on its menu, such as an Apple Walnut Chicken Salad at 570 calories (with “lite” balsamic vinaigrette dressing). But watch out for the caramel cinnamon swirl French toast at 2,090 calories.

Earlier this year KFC bestowed upon mankind the Double Down, two fried chicken fillets sandwiching two slices of Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese, two slices of bacon and sauce, with no bun. That comes in at 540 calories, 32 grams of fat and 1,380 mg of sodium (there’s a slightly slimmer grilled version).

What’s next? We’re afraid to even ask. But the Frankensteinian BurgerMelt may be part of a new trend. The website This Is Why You’re Fat features a “pake”— an entire pie sandwiched between two layers of cake, plus frosting. Because if you can’t decide between pie and cake….

Excuse is while we try to make our head stop hurting.
