A manhunt was underway for a gunman who killed one teenage boy and wounded another during a birthday party in the unincorporated area of South Whittier, a Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokeswoman said Saturday.

Deputies from the Norwalk station responded about 10 p.m. Friday to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon at a home in the 9800 block of Calmada Avenue, spokeswoman Lillian Peck said. Peck said the gunman, between the ages of 20 and 25, tried to rob the two boys.

Deputies found Paul Jaurequi, 17, in the backyard with several gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. A second 17-year-old, whose name was not released, was found in the front yard with a single wound, Peck said. He was hospitalized.
