Voters to choose Rep. Jane Harman’s successor Tuesday

Voters in the South Bay go to the polls Tuesday to choose Democrat Janice Hahn or Republican Craig Huey to succeed former Rep. Jane Harman as their congressional representative.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. throughout the 36th Congressional District, which runs from Venice to San Pedro and juts inland through Torrance, Lomita and parts of other communities. For information about polling places or to report problems, go to https://lavote.net/.

While Hahn, 59, is favored to win, the race has been contentious and hard-fought. Both candidates have spent much of their war chests of around $1 million apiece on mailers criticizing the other in attacks that have grown increasingly personal.

Huey, 61, the owner of a marketing firm and publisher of Christian voting guides, rallied “tea party” members and other conservatives to his side in hopes of overcoming Democrats’ 18-point registration edge. Hahn, a Los Angeles city councilwoman, had help from organized labor, the California Democratic Party and many prominent Democrats, including President Obama and former President Bill Clinton.
