In the 10th District in the Mid-City area, five candidates want to replace Martin Ludlow, who resigned to head the county Federation of Labor. The most prominent is Herb Wesson, a former Assembly speaker.

Twelve candidates filed in the eastern and northeastern 14th District, which was represented by Antonio Villaraigosa, now mayor.

The leading contenders are likely to be Jose Huizar, the president of the Los Angeles Unified School District board, and Nick Pacheco, who lost the council seat to Villaraigosa in 2003.

Olympic boxing gold medalist Paul Gonzalez is also running.

The election is Nov. 8.
