Driver was speeding before fatal Pico Rivera crash, police say
A violent crash in Pico Rivera that killed three people, including two children, Thursday night appears to have been caused by a speeding driver who crossed into oncoming traffic, authorities said.
A preliminary investigation shows that the northbound Honda Civic was going too fast around a curve in the 3500 block of San Gabriel River Parkway and veered into the southbound lanes, where it slammed head-on into a Nissan Sentra, said Lt. Arthur Scott of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The 22-year-old male driver of the Civic and two boys, ages 11 and 13, died at the scene. All three were thrown from the car. Scott said the driver was taking children home from a party.
A woman in the passenger seat and another child in the back seat of the Civic were hospitalized in critical condition.
The Sheriff’s Department said the crash was reported about 8:45 p.m. near Rose Hills Road and the 605 Freeway.
“It’s terrible,” Lt. Andrew Meyer of the agency’s Pico Rivera station said.
The names of the victims were not immediately available.
The Sentra was carrying two women. Both were hospitalized in serious condition.
