12 Firms to Fund Water Cleanup
Twelve companies have agreed to reimburse the federal government $10 million for cleaning up hazardous groundwater under a Superfund site in the San Gabriel Valley, according to a consent decree filed by federal officials Thursday.
The Puente Valley Operable Unit, which lies primarily under the City of Industry and part of La Puente, is contaminated with chlorinated organic solvents.
In 1984 the site was deemed a high-priority site in need of cleanup.
The Environmental Protection Agency has spent $17 million cleaning the water, which is treated well enough for residents to drink safely, said Dustin Minor, assistant regional counsel for the EPA.
The dozen firms agreeing to pay part of the cleanup costs are: Acorn Engineering Co.; Aerosol Services Co.; C. Roy Herring/Miriam Herring Trust; GOE Engineering; Herring Investments; Hexcel Corp.; Lansco Die Casting Inc.; Saltire Industrial Inc.; Somitex Prints of California Inc.; Union Pacific Railroad Co.; Utility Trailer Manufacturing Co.; and Walter K. Lim/Sylvia Lim/Nancy Lim.
