County Will Remove Cross on Official Seal

Re “Facing Suit, County to Remove Seal’s Cross,” June 2: So, the L.A. County supervisors caved in and decided to remove a “tiny gold cross” on the county seal under threat of lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union. This threat is blackmail. The ACLU had no complaint until some anonymous bellyachers, who were not harmed in any way, brought up the issue. This was on the heels of a similar incident in Redlands.

Were the ACLU to be any other kind of organization, its actions would be properly viewed as racketeering. It represents tyranny by the minority over the majority. Has the ACLU nothing left to worry and fight about?

The ACLU has saved me money. I was annoyed by the story, and all the fuss the ACLU has made over the L.A. County seal. Fortunately, the story came only one day after I received a dues renewal request from the ACLU. This kind of “time on my hands, who can I sue” mentality would be a waste of my retirement dollars. Thank you, ACLU; the check is not in the mail.

If the ACLU doesn’t like the nod to our history on the seal, then have it foot the bill for the county to have all the new letterhead, signage in meeting rooms, repainted cars, etc.

What’s next? Animal rights’ activists getting up in arms about other symbols on the seal: the tuna fish and cow (exploitation of animals) or some churchgoing nuts (no heathen goddess allowed)? Come on, we’ve got better things to worry about.
