Volunteers help clean up Thousand Steps Beach
Chris Tebbutt of South Laguna was tired of seeing debris left on the beaches and resolved to do something about it.
So he reached out to the nonprofit Eco-Warrior Foundation in hopes that the nonprofit dedicated to preserving oceans and beaches would partner with him and help organize a community beach cleanup.
And that’s what happened. Last Saturday, about 70 volunteers cleaned up Thousand Steps Beach in South Laguna.
Tebbutt says he doesn’t want to stop there and has plans to do cleanups at Table Rock and West Street beaches, “also very hard hit from summer visitors.”
“I wanted it to be more than just another cleanup,” he added. “I wanted to create an event that would strengthen our community and an opportunity for our neighbors to come out and get to know each other.”
He noted some of the findings amid the estimated 450 to 500 pounds of trash: an American flag and Fourth of July plastic tablecloth, a brand new dress with the tags still on it and a large plastic sheet covered in human waste.
“We immediately called OC Parks, and they came right away to remove the biohazard,” said Tebbutt, 45.
