Huntington Beach Concert band announces summer series lineup

The Huntington Beach Concert Band will present its 43rd summer series with performances showcasing American music, Latin jazz, swing and more.

The concerts in the series, which is free to the public and kicks off June 26 with the “Made in America” show, will be held at 5 p.m. Sundays throughout the summer in Central Park behind the Huntington Beach Central Library, 7111 Talbert Ave.

The nonprofit concert band, which is composed of professional and amateur musicians from around the region, is funded through donations and is independent from the city, said general manager Linda D. Couey.

Each year for the series, the band invites other musicians to showcase their own songs and covers.

Free dance lessons in swing and Latin styles will precede a selection of the performances.

Here is the schedule:

June 26: Huntington Beach Concert Band presenting American classics.

July 3: Night Blooming Jazzmen, a traditional Dixieland band.

July 10: Laguna Beach Community Band.

July 17: Yari More Latin Band, which combines salsa, cumbia, merengue, boleros and cha-cha styles.

July 24: Huntington Beach Concert Band performing popular marches and melodies with local high school musicians.

July 31: Golden West Pops.

Aug. 7: Jamie Wood & Daddy-O, local artists playing blues, vintage jazz, jump, swing and boogie-woogie

Aug. 14: Covina Concert Band and Huntington Beach Concert Band performing favorites from Broadway musicals.

Aug. 21: Bob DeSena playing Latin jazz.

Aug. 28: The Wiseguys Big Band Machine with a blend of swing and jazz in a Rat Pack style.

Sept. 4: The Swing Era Orchestra performing songs by Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Harry James.
