Evans Agrees to Do Some Scouting for the Mariners

Former Dodger general manager Dan Evans has reached an agreement with the Seattle Mariners to do professional and free-agent scouting in California on a special assignment basis for General Manager Bill Bavasi, a major league executive said Wednesday.

Evans could not be reached, and Bavasi refused to comment, pending what the executive described as completion of talks between Evans and the Dodgers regarding payout of his 2004 contract, which includes a salary of $500,000.

For Evans and Bavasi, the development is something of a role reversal considering that Evans hired Bavasi to be the Dodger director of player development after Bavasi had resigned as Angel general manager in 1999.

The move gives Evans a chance to stay active in the game while he waits to see if anything else develops. It’s a lot like the opportunity Evans gave Dean Taylor a year ago when Taylor had been fired as Milwaukee general manager and Evans hired him to do special assignment scouting.

Evans also had impressed Seattle’s upper management while a finalist for the GM position that went to Pat Gillick, who has since moved into a consultant’s role under Bavasi.
