Ozzie Guillen: ‘Ready to go’ in Miami

Chicago White Sox General Manager Ken Williams said Tuesday he’s offered to step aside or take another job in the organization after some of his moves failed to pan out and the team foundered.

Williams made his comments in the dugout the day after manager Ozzie Guillen was released from his contract with one year remaining. Guillen tweeted Tuesday that he was in town “ready to go” with the Florida Marlins.

Williams said he made the offer to White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf and would have understood if the White Sox wanted to put someone else in his seat. Chicago will miss the playoffs for a third straight season. And Williams’ biggest off-season acquisition, Adam Dunn, entered the final two games with a .160 batting average and 11 homers.

“It has not worked out, you have to be accountable for that,” Williams said.

Guillen, whose relationship with Williams had become increasingly strained the last two years, left when he couldn’t get a contract extension. He had a year remaining on his deal after the team picked up his 2012 option in January.

One minor holdup: The Marlins had yet to confirm a deal, saving some suspense for the final day of the regular season Wednesday. But Guillen’s website and his tweet eliminated much of the drama by leaking the news he has agreed to become the Marlins’ manager.

On Tuesday afternoon he tweeted: “Weird to be in miami in this time but very happy ready to go.”

That sounded fine to Marlins players.

“This should be a good thing,” catcher John Buck said. “It’s a step forward. It’s a commitment by the team showing we want to win. Part of that is getting a manager who has proven that.”

Florida Manager Jack McKeon said Monday he planned to retire at the end of the season.
