Jesus Soto Karass-Yoshihiro Kamegai rematch added to Sept. 10 ‘Chocolatito’ card at Forum

The rematch of a record-setting punch-fest that ended in a draw between Jesus Soto Karass and Yoshihiro Kamegai in April at a downtown L.A. club has been promoted to an HBO co-main event at the Forum.

The rematch will precede the super-flyweight main event between super-flyweight champion Carlos Cuadras of Mexico and Nicaragua’s World Boxing Council flyweight champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez Sept. 10.

“If fans thought the first Kamegai and Soto Karass fight was an epic fight-of-the-year contender, let me just say this: On Sept. 10, both fighters will be coming back in the ring with a vengeance to prove who is the true winner in this rematch,” Oscar De La Hoya, chairman and chief executive of Golden Boy Promotions, said in a statement.

Neither Soto Karass (28-10-4, 18 knockouts) nor Kamegai (26-3-2, 23 KOs) has ever claimed a world title, but the super-welterweights both have a come-forward style that created a brawl at the Belasco Theater.

“There’s unfinished business with the draw, and the winner moves up in their division,” fight promoter Tom Loeffler said. “It’s the perfect fight to complement the ‘Chocolatito’ fight, in a bigger venue.”

Tickets for the card, priced $25 to $300, go on sale Friday at noon PDT.

HBO will start the afternoon Sept. 10 with live coverage from England of three-belt middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin defending his titles against England’s International Boxing Federation welterweight champion Kell Brook at O2 Arena.
