Tailback Mark Ingram will sit out No. 1 Alabama’s opener because of knee injury

Alabama tailback Mark Ingram will sit out No. 1 Alabama’s opener against San Jose State on Saturday after injuring his left knee late in practice Monday, Coach Nick Saban said Tuesday.

Saban said in a statement that the reigning Heisman Trophy winner had an arthroscopic procedure and should make a full recovery in a “relatively short time.”

“Mark will definitely be out for this week’s game against San Jose State and we will manage this on a week-to-week basis beyond this week,” Saban said.

If the absence proves short-lived, it figures to have more of an effect on Ingram’s bid to join Ohio State running back Archie Griffin as the only two-time Heisman winners than it does on Alabama’s hopes for a second national title in a row.

The NCAA denied Mississippi quarterback Jeremiah Masoli’s request for a waiver that would allow him to play immediately, meaning the former Oregon standout won’t be eligible until 2011. Mississippi officials said they plan to the appeal the decision.

Brigham Young said it is leaving the Mountain West Conference and will play as an independent in football while joining the West Coast Conference in all other sports in the 2011-12 school year.

Chelios retires after 26 seasons

Chris Chelios is retiring at 48 after 26 NHL seasons and three Stanley Cup titles. Chelios won three Norris Trophies as the league’s top defenseman during a career that included stops in Montreal, Chicago, Detroit and Atlanta.

Edmonton Oilers goalie Nikolai Khabibulin was sentenced to 30 days in jail after a drunk-driving conviction in Scottsdale, Ariz. Khabibulin, who is appealing the sentence, also was fined $5,100 and must enroll in an alcohol-treatment program.

The New York Islanders signed captain Doug Weight to a one-year contract. Financial terms were not announced.

Robinho headed to AC Milan

Brazilian World Cup striker Robinho was the only big-name soccer player to switch clubs as Europe’s summer transfer window prepared to close. The 26-year-old forward, who signed with Manchester City two years ago for an English-record $50 million, was sent to AC Milan for $19 million after failing to settle in England. The move allowed AC Milan, which last week acquired Swedish forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Barcelona, to send Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to Schalke 04 in Germany.

The PGA Tour suspended a rule that resulted in Jim Furyk’s disqualification from last week’s Barclays tournament after he missed his pro-am starting time. Should a player be late for his pro-am starting time for the remainder of the season, “Such player will be required to participate in the remainder of the pro-am round and may be required to perform additional sponsor activity,” Commissioner Tim Finchem said in a statement.

The 2017 PGA Championship was awarded to Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C.

The Green Bay Packers put cornerback Al Harris and safety Atari Bigby on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, meaning neither player will be eligible to play for the first six weeks of the season.

The Minnesota Vikings put wide receiver Sidney Rice on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. Rice had hip surgery last week.

Laurent Fignon, the Frenchman who won the Tour de France in 1983 and 1984 and lost to Greg LeMond in 1989 in the race’s closest finish, died Tuesday of cancer at 50.
