UCLA vs. Tulsa: How they match up

Share

WHO: No. 4 UCLA (26-8) vs. No. 13 Tulsa (21-12)

WHAT: NCAA South regional second-round game, Friday, 6:57 p.m.

WHERE: Viejas Arena, San Diego. TV: truTV. RADIO: 710.

UPDATE: Tulsa averages 73.1 points per game and appears to be a budget version of UCLA on offense. Golden Hurricane Coach Danny Manning says his team won’t change styles for this games, but the Bruins, who average 81.8 points, have feasted on teams who run with them. Oregon and Stanford both pushed the tempo in the Pac-12 tournament and UCLA beat the Ducks, 82-63, and the Cardinal, 84-59. Tulsa has won 11 consecutive games, but was 0-3 against teams that made the tournament, losing to Wichita State, Creighton and Oklahoma. Tulsa will throw one different look at the Bruins: guard James Woodard and forward Rashad Smith, the team’s top scorers, are both left-handed. Woodard averages 15.7 points and Smith 12.1. UCLA’s Kyle Anderson has been exceptional all season, averaging 14.9 points, 8.8 rebounds and 6.4 assists, and he upped his game during the Pac-12 tournament. UCLA, which lacks a consistent inside presence, should have no worries. Tulsa lacks one as well. Like the Bruins, their leading rebounder is a guard — Woodard averages 5.8.
