Ball Thinks the Beavers Will Want to Run It Up

The key to beating Oregon State would appear to be putting the sort of defensive pressure USC did on quarterback Derek Anderson--sacking him five times in a 22-0 shutout.

But UCLA defensive end Dave Ball isn’t so sure.

“We think it’s going to be different. We think they’ll try to run the ball a lot more,” Ball said. “We just don’t think they’re going to pass that much after what [USC] did to their passing--plus, we think they’re going to look at our Colorado game.”

UCLA gave up 325 yards rushing against the Buffaloes, and Oregon State has the Pacific 10’s leading rusher, Steven Jackson.

“We’ve just got to be a lot more tough versus the run,” Ball said.

The Bruins don’t want to get blindsided by Oregon State like they did by Colorado the week after USC manhandled the Buffaloes.

“What we thought versus Colorado was wrong then. This time, we have to step it up a lot more than we did against Colorado,” Ball said. “We didn’t have a great week of practice then and were kind of soft--not we, but I was personally.

“It seems like we’re getting the teams coming off embarrassing losses and right in the corner.... We have to be equally as intense. It’s like a wounded animal, you know.”

Tailback Akil Harris, expected to lose carries this week to Manuel White, is still playing with a sore thumb but said it doesn’t affect him.

Coach Bob Toledo said Harris has “missed some holes” but his effectiveness also has been lessened by injuries to the fullback corps.

“For me, it’s just time to make the best of every carry,” Harris said. “Right now I just feel it’s a change-up for what we’re doing this week.”

Linebacker Brandon Chillar stood with his foot on freshman quarterback Drew Olson’s back after practice--posing for a photo to accompany a feature on Chillar in The Daily Bruin.

Cory Paus looked on, smiling. The reporter originally had asked him.

“I don’t need to be on the front of the school newspaper with some guy standing over me,” Paus said.

He supplied his own stand-in: He told the reporter the rookie would do it.

C.J. Niusulu will have a pre-preliminary hearing Nov. 5 and a preliminary hearing the following day in Barstow. The freshman defensive end faces felony battery charges stemming from an incident at a drive-in theater in July.
