Oregon’s Jamere Holland has a big touchdown

Oregon receiver Jamere Holland enjoyed a big game against his former teammates.

Holland, a star at Woodland Hills Taft High, transferred from USC to Oregon after the 2006 season.

Holland caught a nine-yard pass during a first-quarter scoring drive that gave the Ducks a 10-3 lead.

But his most important catch came late in the second quarter when he got free in the back of the end zone and caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jeremiah Masoli for a 24-17 lead.

Holland finished with three receptions for 33 yards.

They’re quacks

Thousands of Oregon fans wore special-edition black T-shirts for the game.

One shirt had “Fright Night” written in yellow letters above a rendering of a duck and cross bones in a jack-o-lantern. It also included the date and “Oregon vs. USC.”

Another shirt featured a gothic rendering of “Autzen” below a yellow Grim Reaper figure with a duck bill peeking from beneath a hood. On the back, yellow letters read, “Where Teams Go to R.I.P.”

“It all kind of came together,” said sophomore Casey McLafferty, who was standing in the front row of the student section. “Halloween, [ESPN’s] ‘GameDay,’ USC. It’s a perfect storm.”

“And,” sophomore Spencer Gabriel added, “It’s going to have a perfect ending.”

Call for huddle

Pacific 10 Conference Commissioner Larry Scott said before Saturday night’s game in Eugene that he planned on meeting today with Oregon officials and LeGarrette Blount to discuss the running back’s possible reinstatement .

Oregon Coach Chip Kelly suspended Blount for the season after he punched Boise State’s Byron Hout following Oregon’s Sept. 3 season-opening loss in Idaho.

Kelly later said Blount might be reinstated sometime in November if he adhered to a set of rules mandated by the school.

If Oregon decides to allow Blount back on the team, it would need approval from the Pac-10. “I have ultimate authority,” Scott said.

Scott said he was meeting with officials to gather facts to expedite any decision he might have to make. “They have to initiate the process,” Scott said.

In reserve

With several USC receivers out or nursing injuries, third-year sophomore Brandon Carswell got a chance and made the most of it.

Carswell, who had one reception going into the season, caught three passes for 24 yards.

Rain and shine

It rained early Saturday morning and for a time a few hours before kickoff, but the sun was out about 20 minutes before. Rain started falling at halftime, but it wasn’t a factor.

Quick hits

USC leads the series with Oregon, 37-17-2 . . . . The Trojans are 6-6 in games played on Halloween.
