Round 1: Well, that was fast

SOUND AND VISION

College basketball viewing options for this weekend were scrambled Thursday when USC’s O.J. Mayo showed up at Omaha’s Qwest Center and uncovered new meaning to his personal concept of one-and-done.

The eagerly awaited USC-Wisconsin second-round matchup never materialized, getting lost along with Mayo’s shooting touch and several pieces of his certifiably ready-for-the-NBA portfolio.

Mayo made only six of 16 field-goal attempts, finishing a clear second in the star freshman competition with Michael Beasley as Kansas State rolled past the Trojans in a first-round Midwest Regional game, 80-67.

In fact, during its final minutes, USC-Kansas State became the game in the way for local viewers wanting to see whether tiny Belmont was actually going to score one of the greatest upsets in the history of the NCAA tournament. Belmont, the No. 15-seeded team in the West, tied No. 2 Duke with 2:02 to go, led with 1:40 left and turned the remainder of its game into must-see television.

At the time, Kansas State led USC by a dozen points with three minutes to play, prompting CBS to cut back and forth between the games. It made for a choppy ride, but local viewers saw the decisive moments that saved Duke in the final seconds -- Gerald Henderson’s end-to-end drive, DeMarcus Nelson’s clinching interception of an inbounds pass, and the Blue Devils barely holding on for a 71-70 triumph.

Saturday’s second-round game in Omaha will now pair Kansas State against Wisconsin, which recorded a deceptive 71-56 victory over Cal State Fullerton. The Titans gave the Badgers more of a struggle than most expected, and gave announcers Kevin Harlan and Dan Bonner more to marvel about once they covered the anecdotes about Fullerton being a magnet school for transfers and the Titans, by virtue of their College World Series success, being big in Omaha.

Overlapping with UCLA’s game against Mississippi Valley State, Fullerton-Wisconsin aired locally on Channel 56, and was soon the target destination for anyone wanting to watch something more than extended UCLA layup drills.

Poor Mississippi Valley State. The Delta Devils needed more than 15 minutes to reach double digits -- and the first half was their big offensive half. UCLA won, 70-29, Mississippi Valley State set a tournament record for fewest points in a first-round game and Dick Enberg signaled the merciful end by congratulating the Delta Devils for making the tournament, for playing hard and for “making a lot of your alums proud.” Beyond that, what could one say?

The first round continues today with four games on CBS. The local menu features three games with West Coast ties: Gonzaga-Davidson at 9:15 a.m., San Diego-Connecticut at 11:45 a.m. and Oregon-Mississippi State at 4:15 p.m. On Saturday, UCLA-Texas A&M; will follow Stanford-Marquette, which will begin at 3:45 p.m. at the Honda Center.

Also available for viewing this weekend:

World Golf Championships (today, 11 a.m., Golf Channel; Saturday, 11 a.m., Channel 4; Sunday, noon, Channel 4): At Doral, Fla., this weekend, there is the World Golf Championships field and the Other-Worldly Golf Champion. After finishing Thursday’s first round with a five-under 67, Tiger Woods is two strokes off the lead and well-positioned for his sixth straight PGA Tour victory and ninth in 10 tries. That would give Woods six Doral victories in the last seven years. At this point, it has gone beyond surreal. Especially for a guy ranked 154th in driving accuracy.

ATP/WTA Pacific Life Open (women’s final Sunday at noon, men’s final at 2 p.m., FSN West): Tournament at a glance: On the men’s side, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and two Americans (James Blake and Mardy Fish) advanced to the quarterfinals. On the women’s side, Maria Sharapova reached the semifinals, improving her 2008 record to 18-0. All things considered, a good time for FSN West and the promoters at Indian Wells.

“60 Minutes” (Sunday, 7 p.m., Channel 2): A profile of David Beckham includes a report that Beckham has an option to buy a Major League Soccer team after his Galaxy contract expires in 2011. Before that, the Galaxy would be more interested in seeing Beckham play for a Major League Soccer team.

Manchester United versus Liverpool (Sunday, 6:30 a.m., Setanta Sports Channel) and Chelsea versus Arsenal (Sunday, 9 a.m., Fox Soccer Channel, Fox Sports en Espanol): The English Premier League indulges in some March Madness of its own. No brackets here, but these two matches read like a Final Four: No. 1 Manchester United versus No. 4 Liverpool, No. 2 Arsenal versus No. 3 Chelsea. No Cinderellas here, either. This foursome has dominated English soccer for years, and now has set out to restore England’s good name in Europe. During a year in which England’s national team is sitting out the European Championships, United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea have all advanced to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League.
