For the first three minutes of Mark Trumbo’s session on Monday, Dodgers rookie Corey Seager felt safe. He had swatted 15 homers in his half of the first round of the home run derby, acquitting himself nicely and turned a hostile crowd at Petco Park into his allies.

“I thought I had a chance, at least,” Seager said a few minutes after Trumbo improved his pace and unleashed a ferocious display of power, smashing eight shots in the final minute to eliminate Seager by the score of 16 to 15.

“That was pretty fun,” Seager said. “He was hitting balls close to the scoreboard. That’s why you’re here. That’s what you want to see. That’s what’s exciting about it.”

And so Seager exited with a smile, happy to share a moment with his father, who threw to him during his session. Jeff Seager raised three professional baseball player. Corey is the youngest. His older brother, Kyle, a third baseman for the Seattle Mariners, is a former All-Star. Justin Seager plays in the Mariners organization. During the winter, Jeff Seager regularly throws batting practice to his boys.

“He could have thrown every ball to the backstop, and I still would have had fun,” Corey Seager said. “It was one of those things that’s going to be fun for us. It’s a good memory.”
