Dodgers’ Don Mattingly selected as All-Star coach

Dodgers Manager Don Mattingly has been selected as a coach for the National League All-Star team.

San Francisco Giants Manager Bruce Bochy, who will manage the NL team because the Giants won the NL pennant last year, invited Mattingly to serve as one of his coaches.

“It’s always an honor,” Mattingly said Sunday. “Four days off is always really nice, but this a big part of our game. I don’t think you can pass it up.”

Mattingly previously coached in an All-Star Game in 2004, as a member of the American League staff, under New York Yankees Manager Joe Torre.

As a player, Mattingly was selected to six All-Star games, from 1984-89. In his final All-Star at-bat — in 1989 at Anaheim Stadium — he doubled off the Dodgers’ Jay Howell.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported Sunday that Bochy had chosen Mattingly and Cincinnati Reds manager Bryan Price as NL coaches. The Reds play host to the All-Star Game July 14.
