Dodgers limited to two hits in eight innings of 7-1 loss to Rockies

ON THE MOUND: Zack Greinke gave up one run over six innings, but that was enough to end his 15-start unbeaten streak dating to last season. His last defeat was on Aug. 9, 2014, in Milwaukee. Between then and Saturday, Greinke was 10-0 with a 1.94 earned-run average. The only run charged to Greinke came in the first inning on a solo home run by Carlos Gonzalez. That was one of four hits given up by Greinke, who struck out five, walked none and hit a batter. The Rockies blew open the game after Greinke departed, scoring six runs in the last three innings to turn a 1-0 lead into 7-0. Sergio Santos gave up five runs in two innings, surrendering a two-run home run to Daniel Descalso in the seventh inning and another to Nolan Arenado in the eighth. On the plus side, Santos managed to strike out four batters in the eighth inning, including DJ LeMahieu, who reached base on a passed ball.

AT THE PLATE: With the Rockies starting a left-hander, Jorge De La Rosa, the Dodgers didn’t start first baseman Adrian Gonzalez or outfielders Joc Pederson and Andre Ethier, all left-handed hitters. Catcher Yasmani Grandal, a switch-hitter who is a greater threat batting left-handed, was also out of the lineup. The makeshift batting order produced only two hits in the first eight innings, a leadoff double by Enrique Hernandez in the first and an infield single by Howie Kendrick in the seventh. The Dodgers scored their only run in the ninth on a hit, a walk and two hit batters. Justin Turner was stuck by a pitch from Scott Oberg with the bases loaded to force in the run.

EXTRA BASES: After striking out four batters in the eighth inning of a 6-4 victory over the Rockies on Friday night, Kenley Jansen declared himself ready to close. While Don Mattingly wanted to avoid using Jansen on Saturday — he had pitched twice in three days, including once in the minor leagues — the manager said he wouldn’t hesitate to call on him to pitch the ninth inning any time after that. . . . Brandon Beachy pitched to hitters for the first time since he underwent reconstructive elbow surgery last year. Beachy threw two 15-pitch innings.
