Boys’ basketball: North’s guards come through in win over Bishop Montgomery

It’s time to start paying attention to Riverside North, which is officially 17-2 but hasn’t lost on the court.

The No. 11-ranked Huskies finally got their much-wanted big-time victory on Monday night in the one-day La Salle tournament, knocking off No. 5-ranked Bishop Montgomery, 64-54. And the big surprise was North’s guards outplayed Bishop Montgomery’s outstanding duo.

Sophomore Dikymbe Martin scored 24 points and senior Deshon Taylor had 22 points. Stephen Thompson Jr. had 21 points for Bishop Montgomery (17-2) and Justin Bibbins 15.

West Ranch defeated Taft, 71-65. Zay Doyle had 18 points and Ryan Beddeo 17. St. Francis defeated Campbell Hall, 66-61, in overtime. Kyle Leufroy had 24 points and Evan Crawford 15. Aaron Holiday scored 24 points and Kahlil Simplis 19 for Campbell Hall.

L.A. Cathedral (12-1) continued its climb to a possible selection in the Open Division playoffs with a 67-43 rout of Golden League leader Palmdale Highland. Ifeoluwa Kalejaiye scored 19 points for the Phantoms.

La Salle defeated Bell-Jeff, 67-59. Oaks Christian defeated Hart, 74-72, on a shot at the buzzer by Austen Moye. Sierra Canyon (17-2) held off Cantwell-Sacred Heart, 45-42. Deveral Ramsey finished with 17 points and made three of four free throws in the final 30 seconds to secure the victory. Gligorije Rakopcevic had 14 points for the Cardinals (13-5), who dropped their third consecutive game, all to tough opponents.

In Massachusetts, No. 1-ranked Santa Ana Mater Dei improved to 19-0 with a 79-67 win over Pennsylvania Neumann-Goretti. Rex Pflueger scored 30 points, M.J. Cage had 20 points and 12 rebounds and La’vette Park added 17. Stanley Johnson, who got into foul trouble, finished with 12.

In Northern California, Long Beach Poly defeated De La Salle, 44-42, in overtime. Chris Sullivan and K.J. Feagin had 13 points apiece.

At Los Osos, Rancho Cucamonga defeated Citrus Valley, 69-39. Daylan Lawrence scored 18 points and Tamer Jabsheh had 14. Damien defeated Los Osos, 73-65. Malik Fitts had 22 points and Jeremy Hemsley added 20 points and eight assists.

At LACES, Douglass fell to LACES, 44-42. Narbonne defeated Palisades, 65-53. Ucheena Okeneme had 24 points and Reverend Maduakor had 15 points.

At Price, L.A. Windward defeated Fresno Bullard, 67-43. University defeated Renaissance, 40-37. Darnell Bettis scored 14 points.

Brentwood defeated Dorsey, 56-43. Tra Holder scored 25 points.

In a Mission League game, Loyola defeated Crespi, 75-55. The Cubs went on a 25-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters. Max Hazzard scored 19 points. Thomas Welsh had 14 points and 12 rebounds. Max Heidegger led Crespi with 19 points.
