Boys’ basketball: Redondo tournament was the place to be

Share

Those basketball fans who made a trip to the Redondo tournament way back in November are looking pretty smart these days, because that was the place to be.

Five of the participating teams are still in contention for state championships _ St. John Bosco, Redondo, Compton, Mayfair and Westchester.

As it turned out, it was almost a preview of the best teams in Southern California.

On Tuesday night, Westchester plays at Redondo in an Open Division semifinal game. It’s a rematch from the third game of the season on Nov. 29 in which Redondo defeated Westchester, 65-64.

So much has changed but in other ways things aren’t much different. Both schools have great coaches, Reggie Morris Jr. for Redondo and Ed Azzam for Westchester. Both have terrific guards. Ian Fox and Leland Green for Redondo and Elijah Stewart, Myles Stewart and Layon Gooden for Westchester.

It will be the battle of the South Bay, with the winner getting to face Mater Dei or Etiwanda on Saturday at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario for the right to make a trip to Sacramento.

In Division II, St. John Bosco and Compton are on a collision course to meet on Saturday in Ontario. Both are favored to win their semifinal games.

Mayfair has to travel to top-seeded Chino Hills in a Division I semifinal.

It has been a long season, but this is the week we find out who has some energy and resiliency left.
