Vikings players told that Randy Moss was waived

Randy Moss’ reunion with the Minnesota Vikings lasted 25 days — and three disappointing losses.

Vikings players confirmed Monday that Coach Brad Childress informed them during a team meeting that Moss had been let go, a few minutes after the NFL Network first reported the Vikings had waived the frustrated wide receiver less than a month after acquiring him in a trade with New England.

Childress and team officials didn’t immediately respond to messages seeking confirmation of the decision.

Moss, who cost the Vikings a third-round draft pick, had only one catch for eight yards against the Patriots on Sunday. In four games for the Vikings, he had 13 catches for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Moss, who was fined $25,000 last week for failing to cooperate with the media and make himself regularly available for interviews, stepped to the lectern after the Patriots game but announced he wouldn’t take any questions. He repeatedly expressed admiration for Patriots Coach Bill Belichick and his former team and criticized the Vikings for not taking enough of his game-planning advice.

Vick says he needs to play smarter

After missing three games because of a rib cartilage injury, Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick said he needs to “play smarter” when he scrambles out of the pocket.

Vick completed his first full practice Monday since being injured Oct. 3, and expects to start for the Philadelphia Eagles when they host the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Vick was limited in practice before Philadelphia’s bye. He was cleared to go after the week off and said he “felt great” on Monday.

Irsay says he wants to make Manning league’s highest-paid player

Jim Irsay insists Peyton Manning will be the NFL’s highest-paid player next season.

He’ll just have to wait until after this season to close the deal.

The Colts owner said Monday he was prepared to make a contract offer to Manning during the team’s off week, but Manning and his agent wanted to wait until after the season.

“Any negotiation is a two-way street and we were ready to roll and we had a proposal, but they wanted to wait,” Irsay said. “That’s OK because every player is different. We had a bye week, and we thought we could have gotten [negotiations] rolling.”

Irsay did not divulge details of the proposal that he hopes will keep Manning in blue and white for the rest of his career. Manning’s current deal expires after the season.
