Angels put up all-around effort in 7-1 win over Indians
KEY MOMENT: David Freese’s single off Cleveland Indians reliever Marc Rzepczynski in the fifth inning, which scored Mike Trout and Albert Pujols to give the Angels a 5-1 lead on their way to a 7-1 victory and a sweep of their three-game series with Cleveland.
AT THE PLATE: Hank Conger hit a two-run home run in the second inning off Zach McAllister. In the sixth inning, Trout hit a two-run double to center field off reliever Carlos Carrasco to widen the Angels’ lead to 7-1.
ON THE MOUND: Angels starter C.J. Wilson allowed one run on two hits in eight innings to improve to 4-2 with a 3.18 earned-run average. The left-hander struck out eight. Reliever Mike Morin, making his major league debut, pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
ON THE FIELD: Left fielder J.B. Shuck made a stellar catch on a fly ball by Mike Aviles in the sixth inning, with the left-handed Shuck running to the left-field corner and reaching out his gloved right hand to make the catch just before he hit the ground. Strong winds hit Angel Stadium for the second consecutive day, with the wind blowing mostly from the outfield toward third base and home plate. “It’s a rarity,” Angels Manager Mike Scioscia said.
EXTRA BASES: Howie Kendrick stole second base twice, in the first inning and the third inning, to give him six steals for the season, matching his total for 2013. After the game, reliever Yoslan Herrera was optioned to triple-A Salt Lake.
UP NEXT: The Angels are off Thursday and resume their nine-game homestand Friday at 7 p.m. against the Texas Rangers. Angels left-hander Hector Santiago (0-4, 4.44 ERA) faces Rangers right-hander Colby Lewis (1-1, 4.60 ERA). TV: FS West; Radio: 830, 1330.
