Reds’ Mat Latos has MRI exam on sore forearm

Cincinnati Reds starter Mat Latos had an MRI exam on his sore pitching forearm Saturday, leaving him unsure of the next step in his recovery from elbow and knee problems.

The right-hander had surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow after last season. He tore cartilage in his left knee while throwing and had surgery on Feb. 14, the day the Reds opened spring training.

Latos had hoped to be ready to rejoin the rotation later this month. He suffered a setback last week when he was scratched from a minor league rehabilitation start because of the sore forearm. He said the elbow and the knee felt good, and he’s unsure why the forearm has become a problem.

Mozeliak gets extension

The St. Louis Cardinals extended the contract of General Manager John Mozeliak for two years through the 2018 season.

Mozeliak, 45, has been with the Cardinals organization for the last 19 seasons, the last six as GM. During Mozeliak’s tenure, the Cardinals have been to the postseason four times, winning two National League pennants, and a World Series championship in 2011.

The Cardinals have also been recognized twice by Baseball America as the organization of the year (2011 and 2013).
