Chauncey Billups might play for the Clippers on Sunday

There appears to be some good news on the Chauncey Billups injury front.

Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro said that Billups, who missed his fourth consecutive game because of a strained right groin, might be available to play over the weekend.

Willie Green started in Billups’ place again Wednesday.

“Chauncey is feeling better,” Del Negro said.

The Clippers don’t play again until Sunday, when they host the Lakers in their designated home game at Staples Center.

The Clippers won’t practice Thursday but will practice Friday and Saturday and then determine whether Billups will play against the Lakers.

Billups has played in only 20 games this season.

“He’s been in and out so much,” Del Negro said. “So … all these nagging things that he’s had, he can get back hopefully over the weekend and play the last handful of games.”

Billups missed the first 14 regular-season games recovering from a left Achilles’ tendon injury.

He then missed 34 games because of what the team called peroneal tendinitis in his left foot, one game because of a sore lower back and then the groin injury.

“His minutes have always been monitored,” Del Negro said. “We know what he brings to the team. But his health hasn’t cooperated. But I think Willie Green has stepped in, and our record is pretty good with Willie, obviously.

“But Chauncey gives us a dimension that we need and we expected, but we weren’t able to capitalize on throughout the season.”

Nagged by poor play

Until the Clippers improve their play and go on a winning streak of some kind, they will keep being asked about their poor play in recent games.

Before Wednesday night’s game against the Suns, the Clippers were 7-8 in their last 15 games.

“I’m not happy with the level of play, probably since the All-Star break,” Del Negro said. “I haven’t seen the urgency overall. And the guys know that and we’ve talked about it.”

The thing is, the Clippers keep talking about having to play better.

They know that there are only six regular-season games left and that the playoffs are looming.

“You’ve got to go out and stop talking about urgency and talking about this and talking about that,” Del Negro said. “Go and do it. Get results, and once the results happen, then we can move on to another topic.”

Blake Griffin and Suns forward P.J. Tucker were each given technical fouls with 8:43 left in the first quarter. It was Griffin’s 14th technical foul of the season, tying him with two others for the NBA lead. If Griffin gets a 16th technical, he’ll be suspended for one game.
