No. 24 Utah beats Utah State but loses QB Travis Wilson to shoulder injury

Devontae Booker ran for 120 yards and a touchdown and No. 24 Utah beat Utah State, 24-14, on Friday night at Salt Lake City, a victory marred by an injury to starting quarterback Travis Wilson.

Wilson suffered a shoulder injury of undetermined severity at the end of a long run in the second quarter. He returned to the sideline with ice on his non-throwing shoulder and his arm in a sling. Utah defensive lineman Hunter Dimick, an All-Pac-12 Conference honorable mention choice who had 10 sacks last year, also went down with a leg injury in the second quarter.

“That’s the nature of the game,” said Utah Coach Kyle Whittingham, whose team is 2-0. “Travis is pretty sore right now.”

Miami beats Florida Atlantic

Mark Walton ran for three touchdowns, Joe Yearby had 243 total yards and scored twice and Miami survived some shaky stretches to beat Florida Atlantic, 44-20, at Boca Raton, Fla. Brad Kaaya passed for 287 yards and had a touchdown throw for the 15th consecutive game for the Hurricanes (2-0).

Baylor’s Briles suspends son

Baylor offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, the son of Coach Art Briles, was suspended by his father for the No. 4 Bears’ game Saturday against Lamar for committing an NCAA recruiting violation. Wide receivers coach Tate Wallis also was suspended. The school said the violation was related to evaluations of prospective student-athletes during the spring recruiting period.

Rutgers board meets

Rutgers’ Board of Governors met behind closed doors in New Brunswick, N.J., amid the latest scandal to hit the sports program. University President Robert Barchi said the meeting, which dealt with the university’s athletics program, covered legal issues and that the board had “an extensive and robust conversation, that they were fully briefed.” Football Coach Kyle Flood has kicked six players off the team after their arrests this month on charges that include armed robbery and home-invasion burglary and rioting. Rutgers is also probing whether Flood improperly contacted a teacher about the grades of one of the players before Flood removed him.

Kentucky campus police charged Peyton Wilson, a 24-year-old law student at the school, with second-degree wanton endangerment for operating a drone that crashed into a section of Commonwealth Stadium before the Wildcats’ season opener against Louisiana Lafayette last Saturday. According to Friday’s release, the drone hovered close by skydivers parachuting into the stadium with American flags. One of the skydivers told police he had to take evasive measures. here were no injuries or damage to the stadium. . . . Western Kentucky running back Leon Allen will miss the rest of the season after injuring his left knee injury Thursday night in a victory over Louisiana Tech.
