Manny Ramirez now set to begin minor league assignment Tuesday

Mannywood is headed to New Mexico.

Manny Ramirez is tentatively scheduled to return to the playing field Tuesday with the Dodgers’ triple-A affiliate in Albuquerque, according to sources with knowledge of the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

Ramirez, who will be eligible to play again for the Dodgers on July 3, can play in as many as 10 minor league games at the end of his 50-game suspension for violating baseball’s drug policy.

According to preliminary plans Ramirez and the Dodgers made Thursday morning, he will be in Albuquerque for a four-game series against Nashville.

Ramirez will be off June 27 and report to Class-A Inland Empire the next day. He will play in as many as three games for Inland Empire from June 28-30.

He will work out with the Dodgers on July 1, travel with them July 2 and play in the first game of a three-game series in San Diego on July 3.

The sources said that the schedule is subject to change. The exact number of games that Ramirez will play in the minor leagues has not been determined, but the Dodgers are said to want him to get around 25 at-bats.

Manager Joe Torre didn’t reveal much when asked about Ramirez’s plans.

“Nothing has been defined yet,” Torre said.

Torre guessed that Ramirez would have to play in six or seven games to get ready for his return to the Dodgers.

The manager said he thinks Ramirez will start for the Dodgers as soon as he is eligible to do so.

Broxton sits another day

Jonathan Broxton was unavailable again Thursday because of a sore toe on his right foot.

The game was the second in a row missed by the Dodgers’ closer, and Ramon Troncoso picked up the save against the A’s.

Torre said he expected Broxton back today.

Asked how Broxton hurt himself, Torre said, “Probably has something to do with that little body of his pushing off the mound and throwing 98.”

New home, same story

Back at Dodger Stadium as a visiting player, Nomar Garciaparra said that this season hasn’t been much different for him than the last.

“I’m still dealing with it,” Garciaparra said of the calf problems that have sent him to the disabled list twice this season. Garciaparra’s most recent stint on the disabled list ended only a week ago.

Hand and calf problems limited Garciaparra to 55 games last season, his third with the Dodgers.

Of his role as a part-time player with the A’s, Garciaparra said, “It’s new, but I have no choice.”

Garciaparra, who turns 36 next month, said he still hasn’t thought about whether he’ll play again next season.

Short hops

Left-hander Will Ohman moved closer to returning to the Dodgers’ bullpen, tossing a scoreless inning for triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday. Torre said that Ohman will be activated from the disabled list if he can get through back-to-back outings on Saturday and Sunday without any problems. . . . Claudio Vargas threw three scoreless innings for Albuquerque. Vargas, who is on the 60-day disabled list because of elbow problems, hasn’t given up any runs over six total innings with Albuquerque. . . . Russell Martin held a news conference to announce that he would donate $600,000 over the next decade to the ONE DROP Foundation, which works to make clean water more accessible in impoverished parts of the world. Martin liked the message he delivered but not the way he delivered it. “Talking in front of a podium - you know I don’t like that,” he said. “Obviously, I’m going to have to get better at it.”
