Mike Magee, Robbie Keane lead Galaxy past Vancouver

Unmarked on the header.

And unmarked, of course, on his trademark cartwheeling celebration across the soccer pitch.

Robbie Keane, if nothing else, was thoroughly consistent in helping lead the Galaxy to a 3-0 victory against Vancouver on Saturday night at the Home Depot Center in Carson.

He set up the first of midfielder Mike Magee’s two goals, scored the second goal himself on the glancing header in the 64th minute and thrilled the crowd of 22,959 with his entertaining revelry after the goal.

This was the Galaxy’s 15th shutout of the season and Magee scored his fourth and fifth goals this season.

But back to Keane.

Give him a 9.5 for the gymnastic display and a 9.9 for explosion of pure joy as he looked like a 21-year-old, not a 31-year-old striker.

The Galaxy remained the only team in MLS this season without a loss at home after 15 regular-season home games. The woeful Whitecaps are still searching for their first win on the road this season, now 0-11-5.

But this was just the sort of game — one without a lot on the line, considering the Galaxy already secured a playoff spot — that could possibly prove problematic.

“Vancouver played quite hard and really gave us an excellent first half,” Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena said.

The game had that potential for trouble early on with the Whitecaps threatening and the Galaxy unable to break down Vancouver’s defense. That finally happened late in the first half when David Beckham sent a ball down the left flank to Keane. Keane neatly collected it and sent it across to Magee, who finished it in the 40th minute to make it 1-0.

The Whitecaps gave the Galaxy more time and space in the second half, and Keane made it look painfully easy off the cross from defender Bryan Jordan, beating Vancouver goalkeeper Joe Cannon just inside the right post.

Magee followed Keane’s path with his own header, scoring in the 78th minute, set up by Jordan. Arena talked about Jordan’s importance.

“The last couple of games we’ve given him an opportunity in that position and he’s played well. Nice to see that he can get forward once in awhile,” Arena said. “The last game at home he played real well and it was an important experience for him. We’re going to look to be using him down the stretch.”

Keane arrived in Los Angeles in August and the breaking-in process is still taking place for both sides.

“We’re learning more about him as a player, and he’s learning more about us,” Arena said. “We haven’t had a whole lot of training together, but I think you’re recognizing he’s a pretty good fit.”
