It’s Carter and more as Kings roll over Flames

Jeff Carter finally got some much-needed company.

The Kings’ goal-scoring machine opened the proceedings against Calgary on Saturday night with his 17th of the season and then watched five other teammates join in and score at Staples Center.

They received their most balanced offensive attack this season in their 6-2 win against the Flames. Also scoring were defenseman Jake Muzzin, Trevor Lewis, Justin Williams, Anze Kopitar and Colin Fraser. Young defenseman Slava Voynov recorded three assists, tying a career-high, and Williams added two assists.

After their long home winning streak ended Thursday at the hands of Dallas, the Kings (13-8-2) reacted by picking up the pieces and restarted in emphatic fashion. They chased a shaky Calgary goalie Miikka Kiprusoff from the game with six goals on 22 shots.

Carter’s goal, his 13th in the last 13 games, started the scoring in what was a sloppy first period defensively for both teams. He converted a slick pass from a patient Dustin Brown, on the power play, at 4:18.

“With guys like that he knows where his holes are and he knows he’s with a guy that gets him the puck and he’s there,” Kings Coach Darryl Sutter said of Carter after Saturday’s morning skate.

“He scores. Everybody looks at Jeff just because it’s [on the] outside and [his] speed.

“Really, most of his goals come from between the dots and that triangle, where basically the goalie’s got to make a pretty good save.”

Kings goalie Jonathan Quick recorded his eighth win of the season and the Kings have won eight of their last 10 games. They suffered a scare when Mike Richards left the game after a hit from the Flames’ Tim Jackman. Richards, who has a concussion history, did return for the third period.

Despite the balanced offense, Williams thought the Kings still needed to tighten up and said the game turned into a bit of a track meet.

“We scored six goals, but we still have a lot of things to clean up,” he said in his postgame TV interview.

The Flames, who play the Kings again here Monday, have yielded 10 goals in two games, as they lost 4-0 to the Ducks on Friday night.

Former Kings goalie Kelly Hrudey was able to take another curtain call of appreciation when the team honored him as part of their Legends Series.

He thanked the fans saying, “You encouraged me to be great every night. But more importantly, you made me happy every night.”
