David Toms ends PGA Tour title drought

David Toms made a big comeback at Colonial, winning on the PGA Tour for the first time since 2006 with a closing three-under-par 67 Sunday to prevail by one stroke over Charlie Wi at Fort Worth.

A day after blowing a seven-stroke advantage to go into the final round trailing Wi by one, Toms made an eagle with a wedge shot from 83 yards at the par-five 11th hole.

The 44-year-old Toms finally had the lead back for good at Hogan’s Alley, and didn’t let it get away this time. He finished at 15-under 265.

His long-elusive 13th PGA Tour victory came a week after he lost in a playoff to K.J. Choi at the Players Championship.

Wi had a closing 69 and the fourth runner-up finish of his career.

Ian Poulter denied Luke Donald the top spot in the world golf rankings, beating his fellow Englishman, 2 and 1, in the final of the World Match Play Championship at Casares, Spain, to claim his first title of 2011.

The second-ranked Donald could have risen to No. 1 for the first time, supplanting compatriot Lee Westwood if he’d won the tournament in Andalusia, but he failed to find the consistent form that swept him to the final.

Suzann Pettersen won the Sybase Match Play Championship, beating Cristie Kerr, 1-up, at Hamilton Farm in Gladstone, N.J., to end a 20-month victory drought.

Pettersen never trailed in the match in winning for the first time since the Canadian Women’s Open in September 2009, and for the seventh time in her LPGA Tour career.

In the semifinals, Pettersen beat Na Yeon Choi,4 and 2, and Kerr edged Angela Stanford, 1-up.

Vettel wins Spanish Grand Prix

Formula One leader Sebastian Vettel held off Lewis Hamilton to win the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona, edging his closest championship contender to capture his fourth victory in five races this season.

The Red Bull driver took the lead for good after the second round of pit stops to beat Hamilton by 0.6 of a second and widen his lead in the standings to 41 points over his McLaren rival.

Robert Hight gave John Force Racing its 200th victory, beating teammate Mike Neff in the funny car final in the NHRA Summer Nationals at Topeka, Kan.

Spencer Massey (top fuel) and Shane Gray (pro stock) also won.

UCLA advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA women’s tennis championships at Palo Alto, defeating Duke, 4-2. The Bruins (22-5) will play Florida (29-1), which beat Miami, 4-1. Monday’s semifinal match begins at 4 p.m.

In the NCAA softball tournament, Florida eliminated UCLA in the Gainesville (Fla.) Regional with an 11-3, five-inning victory. The Bruins (36-19) had forced the final game with a 3-2 comeback victory earlier over the Gators.

St. John’s forward Dwayne Polee Jr. says he plans to transfer so he can help his family “get through a health issue.”

Polee, who went to Westchester High, played in all 33 games as a freshman, starting 27 and averaging 4.4 points. He was the 2009-10 City Section player of the year.
