Central Florida upsets No. 8 Louisville

Blake Bortles threw a two-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Godfrey with 23 seconds left and Central Florida stunned No. 8 Louisville by rallying for a 38-35 victory on Friday night at Louisville, Ky., ending the Cardinals’ perfect start.

Down 28-7 midway through the third quarter, the Knights (5-2, 2-0 American Athletic Conference) scored three touchdowns in a 7:22 span to tie the score. Louisville (6-1, 2-1) reclaimed the lead on Dominique Brown’s 15-yard run with three minutes to go, but the Knights drove 75 yards in 11 plays to take the lead for good.

Investigators said Eastern Michigan wide receiver Demarius Reed was shot multiple times in what may have been a robbery. Police in Ypsilanti, Mich., said that personal items were taken from the 20-year-old junior from Chicago. Reed’s body was found by his roommate about 7:15 a.m. Friday in the hallway of an off-campus apartment. Results of an autopsy were not immediately available. No arrests have been made. Reed played in six games this season, catching 15 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown.

Grambling canceled its game Saturday against Jackson State because disgruntled players refused to travel to Jackson, Miss. Southwestern Athletic Conference Grambling spokesman Will Sutton said that the Southwestern Athletic Conference had labeled the game as a “no contest” and that university officials would have no further comment. Several media outlets reported that players did not attend practice Wednesday and Thursday because of issues with program and school leadership. Grambling (0-7) has changed coaches twice in about two months.

The NCAA reinstated Alabama safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix for Saturday’s game after he served a two-game suspension for accepting a short-tern loan of less than $500 from an assistant strength coach, according to a statement released by Alabama.

GOLF: Webb Simpson leads at Las Vegas

Webb Simpson shot an eight-under 63 to reach 15-under 127 for a four-stroke lead after the second round of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. The four-stroke lead broke the tournament second-round record of three set by Lon Hinkle in 1984 and matched by Rich Fehr in 1996 — both when the event was 90 holes.

Amy Yang overcame early jitters while playing in her home country, shooting a five-under 67 to finish in a four-way tie for the lead after the first round of the KEB HanaBank Championship at Incheon, South Korea.

ETC.: Mexico fires Vucetich, hires Herrera

Mexico’s national soccer federation made it official Friday: Victor Manuel Vucetich is out as coach of the national team and Miguel Herrera is in. Herrera, the manager of Liga MX team Club America, is the fourth national team coach in six weeks. His appointment is technically just a “loan” from Club America, with his national team job guaranteed only through Mexico’s two-leg playoff with New Zealand. The winner of the playoff, which will be held next month, will advance to the World Cup in Brazil next summer. Vucetich also managed just two games, but one of them was last week’s win over Panama that kept Mexico’s World Cup hopes alive.
