Jared Goff passed for 268 yards and three touchdowns and visiting California secured a 45-44 victory over Texas on Saturday night when Longhorns kicker Nick Rose missed an extra point with 1:11 left to play.

Texas freshman quarterback Jerrod Heard had scored on a 45-yard run to cap a rally that brought Texas back from 21 points down. But Rose, who had posted a video of himself over the summer kicking a 70-yard field goal, missed the extra point wide right.

Rose walked off the field holding his head. Heard stood on the sideline with his hand on his hips in disbelief.

Heard passed for 364 yards and ran for 163 and three touchdowns. He nearly had his helmet ripped off late in the third quarter when a defensive lineman grabbed his facemask, but Texas (1-2) rallied from that point, trailing 45-24. Khalfani Muhammad ran for 164 yards for Cal (3-0), including a 74-yard touchdown.

at No. 12 Oregon 61, Georgia State 28: Jeff Lockie made his first start for the Ducks a winning one, throwing for 228 yards and two touchdowns. Lockie replaced Vernon Adams Jr., who was rested with a broken index finger on his throwing hand.

Royce Freeman ran for 101 yards and a touchdown for the Ducks, who rebounded from last weekend’s loss at Michigan State. Aidan Schneider added four field goals, all in the first half as Oregon built a 33-7 lead.

Nick Arbuckle threw for 318 yards and three touchdowns, and freshman Penny Hart had nine catches for 128 yards for the Panthers (1-2), who were more than six-touchdown underdogs.

“I’m just going out there and we’re trying to win. I think if you ask Vernon, if you ask Coach [Mark] Helfrich, I don’t think anyone really truly cares who’s out there as long as we’re winning games,” Lockie said.

at Washington 31, Utah State 17: Jake Browning threw for 368 yards and three touchdowns, and the Huskies pulled away in the second half.

Washington (2-1) closed out its nonconference schedule with a second straight 300-yard passing game from the freshman. Browning hit Dwayne Washington on an 81-yard catch-and-run touchdown in the first half, then threw for a pair of scores in the third quarter as the Huskies built a 21-point lead. Browning hit Washington open down the middle for a 33-yard touchdown, then pirouetted away from the rush for a three-yard touchdown toss to Drew Sample, his first career catch.

Colorado 27, at Colorado State 24 (OT): Tedric Thompson blocked Wyatt Bryan’s 27-yard field goal attempt in overtime and Diego Gonzalez atoned for a miss at the end of regulation by making a 32-yarder, giving the Buffaloes a win in the Rocky Mountain Showdown. Gonzalez shanked a 48-yarder as time expired following an 18-yard catch by Nelson Spruce at the 30 on fourth-and-one with two seconds left.

Sefo Luifau threw for 220 yards and two touchdowns for Colorado.

at Oregon State 35, San Jose State 21: Freshman Seth Collins ran for two touchdowns and passed for another and the Beavers scored 21 unanswered second-half points to beat the Spartans. Collins had 16 carries for 114 yards, including touchdown runs of four and 10 yards. He completed 13 of 25 passes for 135 yards, and threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Villamin.

Storm Barrs-Woods, who missed most of last Saturday’s game at Michigan because of a knee injury, rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown in 17 carries.

at Washington State 31, Wyoming 14: Washington State hadn’t won a home football game in more than a year, but the Cougars used a solid team effort to beat Wyoming 31-14 and send their fans home happy on Saturday night.

Luke Falk threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another for Washington State, which had not won a game in Pullman since beating Portland State on Sept. 13, 2014. The Cougars had not defeated an FBS opponent at home since beating Utah in 2013.
