Belarus wins gold in freestyle aerials

SOCHI, Russia — Belarus made it two for two in the freestyle aerials when Anton Kushnir combined a five-twist jump with a near-perfect landing to win the men’s competition Monday in the Winter Games. Alla Tsuper won the women’s division on Friday.

Kushnir finished 24 points ahead of silver medalist David Morris of Australia. Jia Zongyang of China picked up the bronze.

The U.S. was not expected to send anyone past qualifying, but Mac Bohonnon moved forward and finished fifth.

Curling: It’s all over for the U.S. men and women, and it wasn’t pretty. The women lost their final game to Korea, 11-2, to finish at 1-8 and in last place. The semifinal round will have Britain going against undefeated Canada and Switzerland playing Sweden.

On the men’s side, the U.S. finished off play with a 6-3 loss to Switzerland and a 2-7 record. One semifinal matchup won’t be decided until after a tiebreaker game between Britain and Norway. The extra game was forced when Britain lost to China, 6-5. The winner of the tiebreaker will play Sweden. The other semifinal is Canada and China.

Biathlon: The U.S. made a little history when Susan Dunklee finished 12th in the women’s 12.5-kilometer mass start. It was the first time a U.S. woman has ever qualified for the final, making it the best finish ever.

Darya Domracheva of Belarus won the gold, beating out Gabriela Soukalova of the Czech Republic. Trini Eckhoff of Norway got the bronze.

Ski jumping: Germany repeated its performance of Vancouver in 2010 when it won the team competition on the large hill. The team of Andreas Wank, Marinus Kraus, Andreas Wellinger and Severin Freund got the win over Austria by 2.7 points. Japan got the bronze.

The U.S. team of Nick Alexander, Nick Fairall, Peter Frenette and Anders Johnson finished 10th.
