Lakers’ week in review

The Lakers’ relatively quiet off-season finally got going as the franchise made a full-on pitch to New York Knicks free agent Carmelo Anthony.

Anthony visited the Lakers on Thursday, after previous meetings with the Chicago Bulls, Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks. The Knicks talked to Anthony later on Thursday, after the Lakers made their case.

While the Lakers have put their efforts into wooing Anthony, they also have their eye on Miami Heat free agent LeBron James. Landing both or either may be a tough road ahead, but of the two -- Anthony may be more likely to come.

After meeting with Anthony, General Manager Mitch Kupchak flew to Cleveland to meet with James’ agent.

Pau Gasol, also a free agent, may return at a discount to the Lakers for the opportunity to play with Anthony.

Initially the Lakers won’t be under the NBA’s salary cap, but proper managing of their books could give the team tremendous spending power -- however, a significant portion of the team’s salary will go to Kobe Bryant.

The Lakers also put in their due diligence to make sure draft pick Julius Randle has a healthy foot. Repairing a high school injury left a screw in his right foot. The team was concerned it might need removal before his professional career.

After visiting a specialist in Indiana, Randall was cleared with no need for surgery. He was named to the Lakers’ summer league roster but may not play until he signs his rookie contract with the team.

The Lakers also lost a few players to free agency with Jodie Meeks agreeing to join the Detroit Pistons.

Chris Kaman will play for the Portland Trail Blazers next season while Jordan Farmar will trade locker rooms, agreeing to terms with the Clippers.

Free agents cannot be signed until the NBA’s annual moratorium completes on July 10.

The Lakers still don’t have a head coach. Candidate Lionel Hollins came off the market, replacing Jason Kidd as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.

Despite coming off their worst season since moving to Los Angeles, the Lakers were the NBA’s most profitable franchise, by a large margin.

Finally, rumors flew over the weekend of a scrimmage at UCLA featuring Anthony, Bryant and even Minnesota All-Star Kevin Love -- although little was actually confirmed, other than Bryant making a visit to the campus.
