Lakers waive Chris Douglas-Roberts, Greg Somogyi

The Lakers waived Chris Douglas-Roberts and Greg Somogyi on Monday, trimming the team’s roster to 16.

Douglas-Roberts seemed to have a real shot to make the regular season roster as a reserve guard capable of playing emergency small forward as needed. In four appearances, he averaged four points on 45.5% shooting.

Douglas-Roberts recently spoke to The Times about a misunderstanding regarding his love for pasta.

Somogyi has potential as a 7-foot-3 center, but he needs seasoning and the Lakers have been impressed by Robert Sacre, taken by the club with the 60th pick in the 2012 NBA Draft.

The Lakers have 13 players under guaranteed contracts. Sacre seems a lock to make opening night although his contract doesn’t become fully guaranteed until closer to January.

The most players a team can carry into the regular season is 15.

The final spot appears to be a battle between second-year guard Andrew Goudelock and rookie Darius Johnson-Odom. Coach Mike Brown has been trying to develop Goudelock as a point guard, but the team is stacked at that position. Ultimately Goudelock may simply be an undersized two-guard.

Johnson-Odom, taken 55th in the draft, was acquired in June via a trade with the Dallas Mavericks in return for about $500,000 in cash. At 6-foot-2, Johnson-Odom is also an undersized shooting guard, but he’s extremely athletic and may be able to provide a defensive spark despite his height.

Johnson-Odom probably has the advantage over Goudelock, but will either make the squad?

The Lakers could go with just 14 players. The Los Angeles D-Fenders, in the NBA Development League, would have the rights to Goudelock, Johnson-Odom, Douglas-Roberts and Somogyi should those players join that league.
