Racing! The sport continues to subject itself to self-inflicted wounds

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa, welcome back to our horse racing newsletter and I hate to break the holiday mood with how the sport is screwing up again.

First, hopefully everyone had a great Thanksgiving. By 6 p.m. today, I will already be sick of all the Christmas music. And I’m not venturing out of the bunker to do any shopping either. I’d much rather wait until everything is all picked over and the prices are higher. That’s how us horse players roll.

OK, I promised you a rant so here goes.

Imagine a couple of veteran sportswriters sitting in a bar discussing which sport is more screwed up: boxing or horse racing. Yes, we’ve had those discussions.

Today, I’ll take the side of horse racing being worse. Andy Asaro recently pointed his legion of followers to a blog item that said the Daily Racing Form would no longer be sold at Churchill Downs. Instead, they are distributing free PPs from Brisnet, which they own.

I decided to check it out with Darren Rogers, media poobah at Churchill. The item was partially right. You can get free PPs throughout the Fall meeting by downloading them. (And you can get them here.)

On-track they are selling a product that “features informative Brisnet.com Premium Plus Past Performances for four-to-eight different racetracks around the country in a bound book with high-quality paper.”

And the cost is $5, which, as was pointed out, is about half of what that that other publication, which they no longer sell, charges.

The DRF ban also is in effect at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, which Churchill owns.

Now, this isn’t to say that Churchill is the only bad guy in this story.

“We felt we were pushed in this direction by the Daily Racing Form when they started to charge significant fees to have Churchill Downs information included in their editions,” Rogers’ boss, John Asher, told Ray Paulick of the Paulick Report. (You can read Ray’s story here.)

Apparently, Churchill PPs were not appearing in some regional editions of the DRF, despite being one of the country’s major tracks, because they weren’t paying for it. It smacks of the old record payola business.

Yes, I understand Churchill Downs and the Daily Racing Form are businesses whose primary responsibility is to make money. I get that.

But, let’s stop for a minute and look at the backdrop.

Horse racing is a sport in trouble. Not Blockbuster trouble. Not print newspaper trouble. But it’s in trouble. Its clientele is old, its growth is stagnant. At the Breeders’ Cup, the New York Times, Louisville Courier Journal and Lexington Herald-Leader had no one in Del Mar to cover it. If horse racing isn’t relevant in Louisville, then where is it?

The newspaper industry, bless its heart, is trying to reinvent itself into new mediums, especially the web and even things such as newsletters. They share information and best practices, hold seminars, hoping one of the entities finds the magic bullet. They know we’re all in this together and are rooting for everyone’s success.

Horse racing, on the other hand, has tracks and companies trying to go “Game of Thrones” on their fellow competitors.

Not having the Daily Racing Form available at the race track would be like not having a Bible in a church.

“No, no, we don’t use the Old and/or New Testament, we have this other version, and it’s cheaper and on better paper, too.”

None of this is new. In online betting, if you are at Churchill Downs and try and sign-on to their wi-fi and use any betting service but theirs —Twin Spires — you are blocked. If you go to DRFbets, you can’t play Churchill Downs. I’ve heard TVG crews are granted different access based on which track they are at and if they are viewed as competitors.

It goes on and on.

Are we back in fifth grade, for goodness sakes?

In a time as desperate as these, shouldn’t everyone in the industry be working together to solve its problems and grow the sport rather than fighting each other to see who will be the last person to turn out the lights?

You know, the rising tide lifts all boats.

When you see situations like this, at least in my business, we have an expression.

“Other than that, how did you like the play Mrs. Lincoln?”

OK, I’m done. Back to your holiday music.

Del Mar review

How Unusual, piloted by Corey Nakatani, ran a perfect race from behind then swept between horses in the stretch to win the $100,000 Red Carpet Handicap over 1 3/8 miles on the turf.

How Unusual, off at 9-1, ran most of the race from the back, picked off some horses on the inside on the backstretch, then went wide entering the final turn, cut between horses and won the race easily.

Favorite Responsibleforlove finished second with Laseen taking third. How Unusual paid $21.80, $7.60 and $5.

“[Trainer] Mike [Pender] and I talked and we both agreed that there was only one way to go with her: to take her back, get her to settle and into a nice rhythm and then make that late run,” Nakatani said. “I thought sure she’d handle the distance and she did. She’s a nice filly.”

Del Mar preview

The highlight of Friday’s card is the Grade 2 $200,000 Hollywood Turf Cup over 1½ miles of the Durante turf course. The track resumes its 12:30 p.m. post after an early Thanksgiving day card. It will be the seventh of eight races, going off about 3:30 p.m.

The race could possibly be a match up of experience and class versus a horse that is on the rise.

The morning-line favorite is Flamboyant at 3-1 for trainer Paddy Gallagher. The 6-year-old gelding has won 4 of 27 lifetime starts on the turf, but 17 of those races were graded stakes. He’s winless in eight tries at Del Mar. Th veteran campaigner has won almost $900,000 in his career. Brice Blanc will be aboard.

The second choice at 7-2 is Chicago Style, a 4-year-old gelding for trainer Thomas Proctor. He started his career at 4 and has won five of seven this year. He’s undefeated in two tries at Del Mar. However, he’s moving up in class as this is only his second stakes race. He was fifth in the John Henry Turf Cup at Santa Anita. Drayden Van Dyke will be riding.

As has been their pattern, Del Mar has half its races on the turf. Today they are going odd races, one, three, five and seven.

Bob Ike’s DM play of the day

FIFTH RACE: No. 1 Beer Tap (9-2)

Lukewarm favorite in full field of juvenile maidens going a flat mile on turf tipped his hand with a good runner-up try sprinting in his most recent start. The Phil D'Amato-trained gelding showed good improvement when blinkers added and switched to grass and should have no trouble with the route distance.

Thursday result: Achira was bet strongly (3-2) and closed furiously but came up a bit short in second-place finish.

Bob Ike is a Partner/VP of Horsebills.com and the proprietor of BobIkePicks.com (full-card picks, 3 Best Plays and betting strategy).

Los Alamitos preview

The weekend of features gets started on Saturday with the Grade 3 $50,000 Las Damas Handicap for fillies and mares 3 and up over 400 yards. Time For Jess is the likely favorite as she has already qualified for the $750,000 Champion of Champions on Dec. 16.

The highlight, though, will be 83 2 year olds trying for one of the 10 fastest times in qualifying for the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity on Sunday night. The final will be run on Dec. 17, closing day of the season.

Expect to see some action on KVN Corona, who is undefeated in five starts. The colt is named for New England Patriots player Kyle Van Noy, who, like the horse’s owner Keith Nellesen, is from Utah. Van Noy played at Brigham Young. KVN Corona has won the Ed Burke Million Futurity and the PCHQA Breeders’ Futurity this year.

J Fire Up has also won two futurities this year, the Governor’s Cup and Golden State. However, she lost by a head to KVN Corona in the Ed Burke.

Last weekend, the field was completed for the Champion of Champions with defending champion Zoomin For Suds making the field along with Grade 1 winners Jess Good Reason and He Looks Hot. Also making the field were a couple of big surprises, Da One Two Special and Firing Tools, both of whom were supplemented into the trials for $5,000.

Ed Burgart LA play of the day

EIGHTH RACE: No. 3 Beach Bumn Foose (7-2)

This 2-year-old gelding has shown signs of talent all year and ran a strong second in last outing vs. prior futurity trial runnerup Energetic. Trainer Mark Skeen now employs jockey Cruz Mendez for the first time. Mendez and Skeen have combined for back-to-back stakes wins with Jesstacartel over the past six weeks.
