Racing! Unraveling the mystery of Friday’s last race at Los Alamitos

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter, and let’s look at what happened on Friday at Los Al.

The email started coming on Friday night and continued on Saturday. You folks felt there was some chicanery in the eighth and final race at Los Alamitos, a maiden claimer.

By all accounts, jockey Evan Roman, aboard Empire Ruler, lodged an objection against Spend It and jockey Brayan Pena. Was it interference? I’m not qualified to make that judgment. A couple of you said it was, a couple of you said it wasn’t. And a couple of you said you had money on it, not that it could possibly — in even the smallest way — influence your judgment.

What that tells me is the job of a steward can be really difficult.

There was even the theory that the TVG announcer was strongly advocating for the horse being taken down and that it might have influenced the stewards. Yes, it’s true, the stewards have a TV in their booth. (Although, I’m guessing they probably just watch a lot of “I Love Lucy” reruns.) Anyway, do you really think the stewards are looking to TVG to help them make a decision?

“Hey, TVG said the horse should come down. We better listen,” an imaginary steward might say.

“Yeah, those guys are never wrong and best of all, they never bet, so we know that’s not influencing their judgment,” said another imaginary steward.

“I know, we better go with them, but not until I watch that commercial that gets rid of bags under the eyes,” the first imaginary steward might have responded.

I did check with a veteran handicapper, whose opinion I absolutely trust, and he thought the horse should have definitely come down.

But what alarmed me, and many of you subscribers, is that the track was not showing replays during the adjudication period. But afterward, it showed the tight pan shot twice, then the head on for all the race until the stretch when it cut to the closing strides for four or five seconds.

So what happened that Los Alamitos didn’t want you to see? Was it the interference or something else?

The replay wasn’t shown because there was a breakdown entering the stretch, which apparently eluded those watching on monitors. That’s easy to do.

Chidamac, with Tyler Baze aboard, broke down, was vanned off, and euthanized.

I asked CHRB public information officer Mike Marten, how this policy of not showing breakdowns came about.

Don Valpredo was a very proactive racing commissioner back in the mid-90s,” Marten said. “For example, he insisted that horses should be wearing different-colored saddle cloths to make it easier for people to identify them. He also noted there was too much dead time during inquiries with people just standing around speculating about what the stewards were doing. He suggested that showing the same video clips over the monitors that the stewards were viewing would improve things all around.

“The California Horse Racing Board then and now prefers for the tracks to implement these types of changes on their own without the CHRB adopting rules to make them happen. Santa Anita happened to be running at that time, so we approached two of their executives and asked them to experiment with the public viewing of inquiries in progress. They agreed.

“However, they felt showing replays of accidents over and over was not a good idea. Valpredo [and some other CHRB execs] … agreed that to get this process in place the tracks should be allowed to print an explanation in the official program indicating it was CHRB policy not to show such replays. The process spread from there to other California tracks and around the country. And that is the way things still stand today.”

Thanks, Mike.

So, I hope that helps. I’m not defending the stewards, the track or the bettors. Just saying that sometimes there is a logical explanation.

Los Alamitos review

Trainer and owner Mick Ruis continues to show the golden touch as One Fast Broad looked outstanding in a last to first win in the $100,000 Soviet Problem Stakes for 2-year-old fillies over a mile.

The filly appeared to be languishing at the back for most of the race until jockey Corey Nakatani asked her on the far turn and then swept her wide as she ran down everyone in the stretch to win by ¾ of a length.

Spiced Perfection was second and front-runner Twisted Rosie was third. OFB paid $4.20, $2.80 and $2.20 as the favorite.

“The race turned out the way we hoped it would,” Ruis said “We knew she would be coming from off the pace. Funny thing is even though she is three-for-three on dirt we think this filly is much better on turf. We’re going to give her about 30 days now and let her chill out and bring her back for the mile race on grass for 3-year-old Cal bred fillies ($200,000 California Cup Oaks Feb. 19 at Santa Anita).’’

Los Alamitos preview

Sunday’s nine-race card is highlighted by one of three graded stakes in the 12-day meeting. The eighth race, about 4 p.m., will be the Grade 2 $200,000 Bayakoa Stakes over 1 1/16 miles for fillies and mares.

I know what you’re thinking. Why would you name a race at Los Alamitos after a horse that had quit racing well before Los Al added thoroughbreds? The race was handed down from Hollywood Park and was first run at Los Al in 2014. Then it wasn’t held in 2015 and went to Del Mar in 2016. Now, It’s back at Los Al.

The favorite is Breeders’ Cup and Eclipse Award winner Champagne Room. The filly won the BC Juvenile Fillies in 2016, followed by the Eclipse Award. She has been lightly raced by trainer Peter Eurton this year, winning the Remington Park Oaks and then finishing sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff in November. Mario Gutierrez is the rider. She is listed at 3-1.

The second favorite is Majestic Heat, at 7-2, who won her dirt debut last month at Del Mar in the Betty Grable Stakes over 7 furlongs. This will be her first try at this distance. Richard Mandella is the trainer and Mike Smith the jockey.

The rest of the card isn’t bad with decent purses. In addition to the Bayakoa there are two starter allowances and one allowance optional claimer. The weekend post is 12:30 p.m.

Shameless radio plug

If you’re up early, real early, I’ll be on the legendary Sam Spear’s radio show about 6:35 a.m. Sunday morning on KNBR in San Francisco. Don’t know what we’ll be talking about but my guess is the newsletter and horse racing.

SEVENTH RACE: No. 4 Midnight Pleasure (9-2)

Like the way this Ruis trainee has finished his last pair around one turn down at Del Mar and should be able to drop into a nice stalking position at this mile journey. Gets some weight off with apprentice Ruben Fuentes trying his hand.

Saturday’s result: Fast Johnny Ringo finished seventh in the fifth race.

Mark Ratzky worked for 22 years for the Daily Racing Form and has been the simulcast announcer/publicity at Los Alamitos for the past 19 years.

FIFTH RACE: No. 5 That’s Amore La Blue (7-2)

She showed improved quickness after an 18-week layoff in last when third vs. a one-length winner who next finished third vs. allowance company. Filly shortens up 30 yards in distance and draws between two rivals who have lacked early quickness.
