Winter Classic 2014 going retro with Maple Leafs, Red Wings jerseys

Share

The 2014 Winter Classic between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings is set for Michigan Stadium on New Year’s Day and is to feature players sporting retro jerseys.

The jerseys won’t be replicas of those worn in the past but will feature a combination of logos and team names from different eras (see photo above).

Most of the Red Wings’ uniforms will feature the 1920s look of the franchise’s Detroit Cougars days with the logo from the 1930s and lettering from the 1980s.

The Maple Leafs’ jerseys will be even more of a conglomeration of eras, with the basic look featuring the style of the 1930s jersey combined with the original 1920s logo as well as number and pattern elements from the 1950s and ‘60s.

“Each year, our NHL Winter Classic uniform designs set out to honor and pay respect to the rich history of the game and the teams taking part in the Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic,” said Brian Jennings, NHL executive vice president of marketing. “To our fans, the NHL Winter Classic jersey is the ultimate keepsake from this extraordinary event, and with two Original Six franchises participating this year, we have created something quite special.”

The Winter Classic festivities will include a series of games at Comerica Park in the two weeks leading to New Year’s Day. They will involve American Hockey League, college and high school games as well as alumni and youth events.
