Angels move quickly, reach terms with 34 of 39 draft picks

Share

The Angels farm system is widely held to be the worst in baseball, which made this month’s draft an important tool in rebuilding.

And though the team needed less than two weeks to reach contract agreements with 34 of its 39 draft picks, its biggest catch may get away: Left-hander Hunter Green, a hard-throwing 17-year-old from Kentucky, remains unsigned. Green, who posted a Twitter picture of himself in an Angels cap on draft day, is committed to the University of Kentucky.

The team has also been unable to reach agreement with three of its other top six picks.

The Angels, who did not have a first-round selection, took Green in the second round, making him the 59th pick overall. Baseball’s recommended bonus for that slot is $942,000, though Green could ask for more because he was the team’s highest selection.

Green, from Warren East High in Bowling Green, had 110 strikeouts and a 0.14 ERA in 51 innings as a senior.

Also unsigned is fourth-round pick Elliot Morris, a right-hander from Pierce Junior College in Washington; fifth-round selection Kyle McGowin, a right-hander from Georgia’s Savannah State; and right-hander Garrett Nuss of Seminole State Junior College in Florida.

Of the 34 players who have reached terms with the Angels, half are pitchers, including right-hander Keynan Middleton of Oregon’s Lane Community College, the team’s second pick.
