The Galaxy will be without Todd Dunivant until nearly August because the veteran defender had surgery for a tear in his abdominal muscles, the Galaxy’s website reported Thursday.

“He had the surgery two or three weeks ago,” the website quoted Galaxy Coach Bruce Arena as saying. “It’s probably late July” before Dunivant, 33, can return to the field, Arena said.

Now in his 12th season, Dunivant suffered the injury during the Galaxy’s 3-0 win over Chivas USA at StubHub Center on April 6.

He hoped to recover and return to play early this month but suffered a setback prior to the Galaxy’s 1-0 loss to the Colorado Rapids on May 3.

Dunivant has appeared in two of the Galaxy’s 10 games so far this season.

He also missed several matches last season due to injuries, including a nagging strain in his left leg, and overall played in 25 of the Galaxy’s 34 games.

In November, the Galaxy signed Dunivant to a multiyear contract extension. He joined the Galaxy in early 2009 when he was traded by Toronto FC.
